In our world its climate week this week, which this year is running from 12th – 18th March. It’s a week that has been designed to inspire people to take action and create a new way of living. Which fits well with what we are trying to achieve at ToyBoxLive.
Now normally our blog is full of things related to toy rental and what the business has been up to which this does relate to however having thought long and hard about this on the drive back home I’ve decided that a more personal approach would best fit .
I’m not an eco warrior and in my previous life before I became a Mum I was very selfish and cared very little about the world and our environment, well really I suppose I didn’t give it much thought (ignorance is bliss) but then again why would I? We weren’t taught about our carbon footprint or how quickly we are running out of energy.
On 14th February 2010 I became a mother to the most beautiful little girl in the world and this has totally changed my perspective on life and the world we live in. I would do anything to make sure she is safe, happy, protected and that the world around her provides her with the upbringing I had and loved. From this one life changing moment I realised that the world needs to take action and become sustainable to ensure a future for our children, grand children and great-grandchildren.
I’ve spent the past 9 months working quite solitary on ToyBoxLive.co.uk, building our website, perfecting the packages and working on sales and I haven’t really spoke to many people in person. I’ve done a lot of emailing and talking over Facebook and Twitter however that personal contact hasn’t been quite there and today I had the most amazing day, maybe it was the excitement of being with other people and learning about how we can all live sustainably, maybe it was being in a place that was just 100% in harmony with its surroundings but whatever it was I have to share it with you.

Taking time out of your own business is often hard however I can honestly say it has probably been the best day for both myself and ToyBoxLive so far in our journey. I joined Ground Work Pennine Lancashire at the Offshoots Permaculture Project at Towneley Park in Burnley this afternoon. In all the time I have lived and worked in Burnley I have never seen so many committed and knowledgeable people and I can’t wait to tell you all about it. The people down at offshoots are doing an absolutely amazing job of educating people in sustainable living and more people need to know about it.
We started off the day with a tour of the site and how a permaculture lifestyle could be adopted, it could be as small as turning your heating down, growing your own vegetables, composting, right through to building your own eco shelter, all these are available for you to see and participate in down at the offshoots project. I decided to join the woodwork team where we were putting together a structure, admittedly my effort at sewing was pretty poor however I’m sure with more practice I may be able to perfect the art of this ancient craft.

Just the pure exhilaration of being outdoors learning about our environment and engaging with other people really put things into perspective. We live in a world that is so fast and furious, that sometimes we need to take a step back, it’s important that our children learn to play , enjoy the outdoors and appreciate and respect the environment we live in, as parents we need to teach our children these skills.
